I want to share that the most powerful tool in the “prevention toolkit” is building resilience through healthy coping mechanisms. Life in high school is undeniably stressful, but using substances to numbing that stress is like putting a bandage over an infected wound—it doesn’t heal the problem; it makes it worse. Instead of turning to a pill or a drink, I encourage you to find “natural dopamine” hits through physical exercise, creative outlets, or mindfulness. When you engage in these activities, your brain releases neurochemicals that improve your mood without the risk of long-term rewiring or dependency. Prevention starts with the quiet, daily decision to face your challenges with a clear mind rather than a clouded one.

The second pillar of prevention is cultivating a supportive “Safety Circle.” In the medical field, we rely on a team to catch errors and provide support; you should do the same. Surround yourself with friends who respect your boundaries and don’t pressure you to “just try it once.” Real friends won’t ask you to compromise your health for a moment of fitting in. Furthermore, identify a “safe adult”—whether it’s a school counselor, a coach, or even your school nurse—whom you can talk to if you feel overwhelmed. Having a predetermined plan for high-pressure social situations, such as a “code word” text to your parents to pick you up, can be the difference between a safe night and a life-altering mistake.

Finally, prevention requires scientific literacy and self-advocacy. As a healthcare professional, I want you to look past the “glamour” shown in movies and see the clinical reality: addiction is a chronic brain disease, not a lack of willpower. Educate yourselves on the pharmacology of what you put in your body; understand that “one time” can indeed be enough to trigger a fatal overdose, especially with the rise of synthetic contaminants like fentanyl in the drug supply. Protect your body like the high-performance machine it is. You are the primary stakeholder in your own health, and by choosing prevention today, you are ensuring that your future self has every opportunity to succeed.
